KEF Q950 Review: Premium Floorstanding Speakers for Audiophiles

KEF Q950: The Q series speaker system line from the English company KEF is now in its 8th generation. Over the brand’s 50-year history, it has become perhaps the company’s most iconic and most popular series. In these speakers, the Kent manufacturer is working out its advanced innovative solutions, which KEF is known for among audiophiles worldwide. Suffice it to say that the series owes its name to the company’s Uni-Q technology, which involves using coaxial speakers that provide sound that is perceived the same, regardless of the listening point.

Speakers with the Q sign are the most affordable acoustic systems with this technology. The Q series acoustics are 6 models that are suitable for stereo and multi-channel systems. The KEF Q series offers an excellent price-quality ratio in a modern design.

Floor-standing acoustics KEF Q950 is the flagship model of the series. This is a 2.5-way speaker system in a closed-box acoustic design. The speakers operate at a load of 8 Ohms with a sensitivity of 91 dB and are distinguished by a wide range of reproduced frequencies, which range from 44 Hz to 28 kHz. The crossover frequency is 2.2 kHz. An amplifier with a power of 15 to 200 W is recommended for working with acoustics.

Build

The speakers are made in an MDF case measuring 112x36x33 cm. The front panel features 4 diffusers. The top one is the very same Uni-Q module with a diameter of 8 inches, with a coplanar and coaxial arrangement of emitters. A tweeter with a dome made of two-layer aluminum is located inside the midrange driver, which acts as an acoustic lens for it. This arrangement of speakers provides the same directionality of acoustic waves with high accuracy of phase matching, and also simplifies the crossover scheme. As a result, a single sound source is created that provides high-quality sound, regardless of the position of the listener in the room.

The KEF Q950 uses the latest 11th-generation Uni-Q module, which has received major updates to the 1.5-inch tweeter loading tube. The HF emitter is equipped with a rubber damper, which levels out parasitic waves in the rear zone. As a result, the accuracy and purity of high frequencies are increased.

The midrange driver of the Uni-Q module has an improved cone shape with concentric notches that improve the propagation of sound waves. The diffuser is made of rigid aluminum, which improves the reproduction of boundary frequencies. The midrange driver improvements also include a Z-Flex suspension with an increased stroke length and a powerful magnetic system. Due to this, distortion at high volume is minimized. Optimal control of the stroke without interfering with the driver’s movement is provided by a centering washer.

Under the Uni-Q module on the front panel, there are 3 more diffusers with a diameter of 8 inches, which look identical. Only the middle one has its magnetic system. This is a bass aluminum LF speaker. Above and below it are aluminum passive radiators ABR. Thanks to their use, the speakers can be placed almost close to the wall without deteriorating the sound quality. The ABR radiators have a new rear suspension made of rubber, which more accurately limits the membrane travel, helping to achieve the maximum sound pressure level without the appearance of extraneous noise.

The KEF Q950 speakers are available in three finishes – white, satin black, and walnut. Magnetic black grilles are optional and sold separately.
